Back on tour: Sunset Sons at Plaza Zurich

If there was an “endless repeat” button, we would have used it immediately. After more than 3 years, Sunset Sons are back on tour and on the road with their new album “Blood Rush Déjà Vu”. They also stopped at Plaza Zurich. Their audience were thrilled with their rousing beats and their typical coolness.

Young band Daens from central Switzerland kicked off the night

The evening was kicked off by  Uri / Schwyz duo Daens consisting of Daniel Beltrametti on vocals and guitar as well as Nico Hunziker on the drums. The duo is the winner of last year’s My Coke music competition and wants to revolutionize the Swiss music market with their cross-over pop. Their setlist consisted of songs like “Lifeline”, “8/11”, “Liar” and “Honest”. Most of their songs are from the pen of Daniel, who sings them with a distinctive voice. The two were already on stage at the Openairs St Gallen and the Blue Balls Festival.

Anticipation was in the air when Sunset Sons entered stage, cheered on after a short changing break and started “Running Man” from their “The River EP” published in 2018. An EP with the theme “just to keep going” – and the four did. Front man Rory, drummer Jed, bass player Pete and guitarist Henry continued their show with “Eyes wide open”, followed immediately by “Bright Lights”. The audience encouraged to sing along.

From the surfbboard to the stages of the world

Sunset Sons got to know each other in 2013 in the original formation in the French surfplace of Hossegor. In April 2014, BBC Radio 1 marked “She wants” as “Next Hype” and put it on their “Introducing” list. The audience reaction was euphoric from the first note. Latest now there was this summer festival feeling in the room with which Sunset Sons quickly captivated the audience.

Even before the band released their debut album “Very rarely say die” in April 2016, they were able to tour through 36 European cities as an opening act with Imagine Dragon. After guitarist Robin Widman’s left in January 2018, the three of them are now officially on the road. But at their live shows they are supported on the guitar by Heny Eastham.

After releasing their The River EP in 2018 they are back with their new third album “Blood Rush Déjà Vu”. The album shows a more mature, darker and more urgent side of the band. Their sound hasn’t lost their trademark, the hymnic festival rock and the serenity.

The winner of the evening

With songs like “Heroes”, “Say Hi” or “Take Control” the setlist was a varied mix from their releases. Each time there was an electrifying excitement in the audience with the first tunes of the more popular songs. Also when frontman Rory grabbed his mini keyboard, jumped into the audience and went cheeck by jowl. He joined the guys from Daens, who had also mingled with the audience. Someone had to hold the microphone, another one the keyboard, whilst Rory played “Remember”. “I win, you loose” – Sunset Sons were definitely the winners of the evening.

Do you know the situation that you hear a song live for the first time and only from then on really celebrate it? Especially with “Alien”, the Zurich club really got going again. The following “On The Road” was not only fitting, but I liked it a lot as well. Of course, Sunset Sons weren’t just released without an encore. Rory came back on stage all alone for the beautifully emotional “Dance Your Life Away”. The rest of the band accompanied him again for “Somewhere Maybe” and “Superman”. “Superman” was a real highlight at the end and the icing on the cake of the whole show!

May Sunset Sons be back very soon!
