Anna Känzig & Tobey Lucas at Mühle Hunziken

The fountain was splashing, while the koi fish calmly made their rounds in the Müli pond. The colorful windows of the pavilion bar glittered in the sunlight. The green trees gave shade to the visitors. With cool drinks and small snacks, you could relax comfortably at the colorful tables. Shortly after 7 p.m. Tobey Lucas hurried across the garden, did a super short soundcheck and started together with Anna Känzig and Hong Yip this musical evening that was eagerly awaited by the Müli guests. That could have turned out differently.

Summer in the Müli garden

At times of Corona, Mühle Hunziken came up with something special. After the long corona lockdown and concert ban, they open their garden for the first time in summer with the necessary distance and protection concept. Equipped with the colorful pavilion bar, a snack van and tons of colorful tables and chairs around the pond, the Müli invites you to summer afternoons and evenings. Anna Känzig and Tobey Lucas took care of the musical entertainment today. Two guitars, two voices, plus some support from Hong Yip on the violin – they didn’t need anything else to make the viewers’ Saturday evening.

From vacation directly to the Müli stage

With a delay of about 15 minutes, the trio started their two sets concert with “Don’t Think Twice”. Right after the first song, Tobey praised the acoustic guitar he was playing on and wanted to keep it. However, the guitar was not his own. His had decided today to destroy itself and was found with a broken neck in the guitar case (apparently this happens more often than you think). Fortunately, a guitar to be borrowed could be quickly found and the problem solved so far.

There was, however, a bigger problem: Tobey Lucas should have been back from vacation in the morning. However, his flight was simply rebooked. So he went from the plane directly onto the motorway towards Rubigen and onto the Müli stage. So he had just made it to the stage. In the end it was a bit stressful, but luckily he was only there with a minimal delay. But they simply left the stress behind and ensured great entertainment with a mix of new titles, their own solo songs and the associated stories. With “Nowadays” there was even a premiere with the second song.

Common album in August

Anna Känzig and Tobey Lucas met in 2012. At that time Tobey asked Anna if she would sing on his album (album “83”, released: October 11, 2013). In return, Anna asked Tobey to step in for her band for the missing guitarist. However, he never came back and Tobey got stuck in Anna’s band (see also: Anna Känzig & Tobey Lucas at das Zelt)

So two musicians with the same passion for folk and country music had found each other. Both Anna and Tobey have performed as solo acts through the years, but their common project remained in the background. Now they had been in the studio last year to record their first album “Two Of A Kind”. It is scheduled for release on August 21, 2020.

Songs like “What You Made Me Do”, the first for the album written song “Something Called Love” w, my favorite “Fall in Love” or “Rough Times” were already presented to us this evening. Songs that are about the small and big moments of happiness, harmony and togetherness. Their polyphonic singing is in the foreground for all songs. However, they were no longer too sure whether they should have written “Rough Times”. The song is exactly about such “corona times”. As if they predicted it, they joked cautiously.

Dazu gabs Solo-Songs wie Tobey Luca’s “Peggy Sue” oder “Down in Louisiana”, sowie Anna Känzig’s “Down and Out”. Wunderschöne, harmonische Stimmen und folkige Meldoien. Ausserdem durfte durfte der berührende Coop-Weihnachtssong “A Million Years”, den das Trio für den Multikonzern letztes Jahr aufnehmen durfte, nicht fehlen.

There were also solo songs like Tobey Luca’s “Peggy Sue” or “Down in Louisiana”, as well as Anna Känzig’s “Down and Out”. Beautiful, harmonious voices and folky melodies. In addition, the touching Coop Christmas song “A Million Years”, which the trio was able to record for the multi group concern last year, was not to be missed.

All good things come in three

But as if in the end it wasn’t enough that Tobey Lucas ’guitar was broken and he barely made it to the stage, the guitar battery also went flat. Okay, they were warned that the battery could only last for 60 minutes. Well, as the saying goes: “All good things come in threes!”. Fortunately, violinist Hong was able to intervene immediately and help out with a spare battery. So the trio ended the evening with the Ryan Adams cover “Oh my sweet Carolina”. The song had actually led years ago to Anna Känzig and Tobey Lucas play together nowadays.

A wonderful performance in possibly the most beautiful garden of Switzerland!
