Concert review: Alexander Eder’s rousing Swiss debut

It was five minutes before the doors opened, and the queue outside the Old Capitol in Langenthal was long. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one who had been waiting for this moment since 2018: Finally, to see Alexander Eder live! He and his band rocked the former cinema with their first Swiss concert, full of energy, wit, and a lot of charm!

The native of Lower Austria stepped onto the stage, beaming from ear to ear, and kicked off the high-energy concert with “Jünger als gestern.” His unmistakable, distinctive voice – deep, smoky, and with massive recognition value – immediately captivated the audience. His songs, a mix of German pop and rock, are melodic, and his lyrics are personal, honest, and straightforward. They are free from any restraint and full of soul and depth. The band, consisting of bassist Jakob Plochberger, drummer Daniel Schadtz, Alexander Bauer on keys, and guitarist Lukas Husak, supported Alexander perfectly.

Alexander Eder’s unforgettable appearance on “The Voice”

Alexander Eder first made waves in 2018 when he participated in the eighth season of “The Voice of Germany” as part of Team Michi & Smudo. Initially hidden behind a curtain, the nineteen-year-old surprised everyone during the Blind Auditions with his incredible voice and made it to the quarter-finals. He once again proved that it’s not necessary to win such talent shows, perhaps even better not to. So, Alexander’s audition song back then, “Your Man” by US country star Josh Turner, of course had to be included in the set. One of the few ballads of the evening. It was a real powerhouse show.

The evening’s setlist was overall a successful mix of original songs and covers. Songs like my favorite “Immer müde,” “Kaffee,” or the yet-to-be-released “Lass uns tanzen” were enthusiastically received by the audience. The Swiss premiere of “Lass dir Zeit mit Erwachsen werden,” a song Alexander Eder co-wrote with the musician Florian Künstler from Lübeck, went down really well. And with the SPD medley, a tribute to Alexander’s favorite German band whom he had supported before, the crowd went wild too.

Hot beats & muscle showdown

Alexander knows exactly how to entertain and captivate the audience. For instance, he had the audience dance from left to right and back again. For the Annenmaykanterei cover “Pocahontas,” he hopped around the stage with a group of kids whom he brought on stage as a thankyou for a gift.

He also gave the female fans weak knees from time to time. Yes, his show is not exaxtly designed for children, considering his lyrics and the clearly ambiguous movements. In the end, he was happy to show off his muscular upper body without his shirt, as some shouted for him to take it off.

“Alles geili Sieche”

For the encore, there was “Für diesen Moment.” The whole venue joined in enthusiastically shouting “Alli geili Sieche”! But what does that actually mean? Alexander was wondering. Swiss German isn’t strenght yet. Someone in the front row translated it as “All awesome guys.” Well, it’s definitely a compliment and means something like, “You’re all great guys and did an awesome job”!

Even though it became quieter towards the end with “Wenn Morgen die Welt untergeht,” Alexander left his audience with a feeling of euphoria and fulfillment. The evening more than made up for the long wait for Alexander Eder’s first Swiss concert.
