Most just shook their heads when I told them that I was going to attend the concert of David “The Hoff” Hasselhoff. At the age of 67, the US actor and singer was on “Freedom! The Journey Continues” tour and also stopped at Samsung Hall in Zurich. I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but certainly no musical heights, that was clear. We were there more because of the old days and because The Hoff is just cult at the end of the day.
Yes, many Sunday afternoons we sat in front of the telly as kids or in our teens and watched episode after episode of Knight Rider and Baywatch (especially Baywatch is still regularly on my TV screen). We mistakenly sang “Happy Looking For Freedom” because we just didn’t understand the lyrics yet at the time, we shouted “Crazy for you” and bent to “Do the limbo dance”.
In the audience one kept discovering on this evening dressed up fans. Some even had red, inflatable lifeguard buoies with them. Everyone knew covers like “Here I Go Again” (Whitesnake), “At 66 years old” (Udo Jürgen) or “Country Roads” (John Denver). Even The Rat Pack’s “That’s Life” was part of the concert. With his hit mix, there was a lot to sing along to and roar that evening. Hitting notes was rather a rarity and from the selection of songs I liked the second part of the show better. Above all, even the 90s star Blümchen was there, with whom The Hoff performed the new duet “Summer Go Away”.
When I left the event venue singing happily along to “Looking For Freedom” during the encore, I felt generally well entertained. It was fun.
