Music Days Steffisburg 2017 – day 3

From 9 to 11 June 2017 the first edition of the Music Days in Steffisburg took place. In the middle of the village square during 3 days 13 bands performed. The purpose of the organizers to revive Steffisburg definitively succeeded. The third and last festival day started quite and relaxed, was wearing out risible muscles and discharged everyone with enough energy for a new, upcoming working week.

Day 3: SUNDAY

On the third and last day of the Music Days Steffisburg the thermostat was raised again. Everyone was going along the shades, started the day slowly and none stressed themselves out. There was a big request for beer and cool drinks.

Fans of Rhythm, the official band of the Sunschyn school in Steffisburg, started with their performance the festival day. I only got there though with the second act, Club de Bombordo (eng. backboard club).

An extra portion of summer

Club de Bombordo are Raffael Graf at vocals and guitar as well as Matthias Zaugg on vocals and percussion. With them on stage was Sarah, member of Thun band Another me, on bass. Grown up in Steffisburg Raffael was happy, that there was such a nice festival created and he could be part of the first edition with his band.

With Latin sounds and African rhythm as well as Spanish and Portoguese lyrics, they brought some extra summer into the village. Yes, it’s not exactly the kind of music, I generally listen to. The sound matched this hot Sunday afternoon. There was a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere at the village square. Some spectators even got carried away to move a little bit.

How about a little refreshment?

In the meantime the festival organisers were giving out water to the visitors, so everyone stayed hydrated in this heath. Of course this heath can be uncomfortable, but this way it’s proper summer. I totally love it.

Bass player Sarah, who just had been standing on stage with Club de Bombordo, changed after a quick reorganisation to the next band. Thun quartet Another Me continued calm and harmonic. Also grown up in the area and spent there a lot of time in their childhood, it also was special for them to play at Steffisburg village square.

Another Me charmed the people with their gentle, sounds for several voices. Whilst they presented their folk pop songs like “Away” or “Fisherman” to the audience, the four of them defied the baking hot sun. They would have loved to jump under the hose, the local fire fighters suddenly brought, starting to water the place. Obviously based on the model of Gampel Openair.

Especially the kids were happy about the shower. With instruments on stage or a camera in hands you rather kept back though. I don’t know, if it really helped or it was only imagination: With the watered place it really seemed quickly to be a little less hot.

Strained risible muscles

Tomazobi strained the risible muscles then. The Bernese troubadours provided a wild programme of music and comedy. “Los Gringos Fantasticos” changed known songs into their own versions.

The four Bernese showed their best boygroup moves, rap skills and brought their Italian vocabulary out. They loved to mess around with the audience and even did a little dance through the audience. The audiece enjoyed themselves, it wasn’t 100% my humour though.

Hand brushing machines and basil

Luckily they didn’t have one of them in the band, Troubas Kater front guy QC was grinning regarding the Tomazobi show. But wait, the trumpet player of the band suspiciously looks like a Tomazobi memeber. 😉

On this day I was most looking forward to Troubas Kater. As the last band of the day as well as of the festival they made things hum once more in this cooling evening.

Usually not the biggest fan of Brass and this kind of Balkan style, I love the Troubas Kater mix with pop, rock, folk and hip hop. Catchy, rhythmic melodies with eloquent and partly super spontaneous lyrics smartly included themes. The whole thing rounded off and complemented with various solos. It’s just fun to listen to Troubas Kater.

One of the most fun parts always is, when QC rhymes spontaneous lyrics and stories with words and themes of the audience. Where is he taking this from?

Words from the audience: Handbürschtmaschine (hand brushing machine), Basilikum (Basil), Husufgabe (homework)

I liked their album release show for “Aber morn…” at Bierhübeli Bern, but Troubas Kater just go well with festivals. The audience went better along on this evening in Steffisburg. The atmosphere was great. The final of the concert the band did during their very last encore in the middle of the audience.

New discovery and highlights

I was asked on Sunday evening, what band was my new discovery of the festival. Honestly, there was none. I knew 9 from 13 bands already. Two I’ve missed and two I didn’t like too much. So no new discovery for me on this weekend.

But a hightlight was to finally listen to the new songs of Death By Chocolate live and generally seeing them again after such a long time (almost 1 year). Apart from that I simply was happy about seeing all the known bands again, whose concerts I like to keep visiting.

Have you discovered something new at the festival? What was your highlight?

The festival is great. Small and nice at a lovely, easy reachable site. The atmosphere was comfortable, relaxed and familiar. It was worth visiting the first Music Days Steffisburg.

It was an absolutely successful weekend and you can already look forward to the next edition.
