“Can I join you, if you win?” – I already thought that Royal Blood won’t be my favourite band, but my friend was so happy that it worked out with the win for 20min the showcase – thanks to Postfinance. So we were off to Exil in Zurich. Checking the band.
I have heard of Royal Blood before. They played Gampel Openair this summer and they were a lot talked and discussed about. The British garage-rock duo from Brighton was founded only in 2013 – and then “they came, saw and won” or similar. As a support act of Actic Monkeys they gained publicity quickly and their debut album “Royal Blood” went after its release in August 2014 directly to no. 1 of the UK charts. They got hyped quite a lot. Rather crazy, isn’t it?
Showing your postcard you even got a free drink by Postfinance and then the showcase already started. The small club was pretty crowded and it became quite hot in there. Frontguy and bass player Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher entered stage and the head bagning in the audience started. The way it is at such showcases, the biggest part of the audience seems not to know the band at all or not well anyway. They listen and applaude at the end of the songs. But both guys aren’t the best showmaster and entertainers. Both weren’t very talkactive. But surprising, what kind of sound can be made only with a bass and drums.
As said, they are not my favourite band. Their music is definitively too hard for my taste. But still interesting to listen something new. That’s why I like these showcases. They are short, atmosphere is relaxed and stressfree. It’s always a great opportunity to hear something new. And if you don’t like it too much, it’s no tragedy either.
